12 DIVIDED (GRADY)

Naryssa has a strange combination of urgency and calm. She knows her city is about to be attacked, probably destroyed. She knows what’s at stake. She also seems confident that we can help somehow.

She says we can stay but that they’re going to divide us into groups and take us to two different places. That scares me. But Spare leans over and reassures me that everything’ll be fine. I’m not comforted. After all Marion’s talk about family and sticking together no matter what, I think she’s giving in way too easily to Naryssa’s plan.

“This is what we need to do,” Naryssa explains to us. “You need to be someplace safe. You need training to prepare for the battle ahead. It will be like nothing you have faced before, I assure you. You have gone on rescue missions. We know. You have battled your way through the NARRA. I give you credit for that. You escaped from the Incels. But when was the last time any of you was in a war?”

When no one says anything, Naryssa keeps going. “You may be fighting for your lives, but we will be fighting for that plus our entire way of life. This is too big to take chances. There is simply too much on the line to leave any resources unused or to leave anything to chance.”

Marion has had her head in her hands. Now she looks up at Naryssa. “And what do you propose, exactly?”

Naryssa looks from one of us to the next. “You, Vic, Spare, Grady, and Amara. You will be taken care of by Gylian and Lataan. They will train you. Get you ready for what is to come. There are things we know that can help you. There is energy around us they can teach you how to access. Xorali and Dec will be with me here in the Surveillance Suite. They will be safest that way.”

Marion says the hell with that. “No way I’m letting Dec out of my sight. Not again. Not ever!”

Her reaction makes me nervous. It’s her confidence, maybe. Or her assertiveness. I worry that she and Naryssa are going to get into a real fight right here in this very room. But Naryssa is calm.

“True. He will be out of your sight for a short time,” she explains. “But not out of your life. I will personally take the very best care of him.”

“But I can still see him, right? Check in on him while we do this…training?”

“I am afraid not. The place you will be assigned to is special. It is sealed off. Going in and out, back and forth between different parts of the compound disrupts the training and the energy fields we will be teaching you to tap into.”

“Forget it then. Deal’s off. We’ll find another way. I’m not going to sit around while—”

Before Marion can finish with her objection, Naryssa hands her a small black wrist-band and gives a similar one to Dec. “You can stay in touch this way.
